An assortment of white wines

Two Kiwis to being with

Seresin Estate Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand (£17.99 The NZ Cellar, Wholefoods, Davy’s Wine Merchants, House of New Zealand Wines, Noble Green, Bon Coeur, Handford Wines, Hay Wines, Cheers Wine Merchants)

2015
Almost more Loire-like than New Zealand in style with quite precise herby stony mineral notes alongside the tense greengage and citrus flavours. Persistent, fresh, keen and clean, still feels like it has some opening up to do. S(+)

2016
A richer & juicier vintage, still has the citrus, greengage and herb notes, but there’s more weight and power here, with the fruit having more of the classic gooseberry (fresh and pie) character. But still lovely tangy tension to the wine, even if I marginally prefer the 2015.

Now to the Loire

Château Jousseliniere Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie 2015, Loire, France (£10.99 Virgin Wines)
With its saline mineral edge and combination of crisp lean structure with quite rich flavour, this has much in common with Chablis. Nice tense wine, bring on the fruits de mer. S-

Further down the Atlantic coast…

Casa de Paços Superior 2016, VR Minho, Portugal (N/A in the UK)
Crisp, bracing and pithy, almost Riesling-like, with perky, pithy, grapefruit and herb notes and a hint of pumice stone. Tasty, bracing stuff. S(-)

Quinta de Paços Morgado do Perdigão Alvarinho & Loureiro 2016, VR Minho, Portugal (N/A in the UK)
Sees the pithy citrus fruit of the above wine fleshed out by Alvarinho, which brings weightier, more exotic notes of apricot kernel and nectarine. I like them both. S(-)

Speaking of Riesling…

Walt Riesling 2016, Pfalz, Germany (£10.25 Steevenson Wines Ltd, Direct Wine Shipments, Alexander Wines Ltd, Dennhoffer Wines, Waistcoat Wines, Chesters Wine Merchants Ltd, Field and Fawcett Wine Merchan, The Hitchin Wine Co Ltd, The General Wine Company, Bacchanalia, Rutland Inn Company Ltd, The Dorset Wine Company, The Soho Wine Supply Co, Grape and Grind, Rodney Densem Wines Limited, The Bottle Shop, Grape and Grain, The Hanging Ditch Wine Merch, Bodnant Welsh Food, Connollys (Wine Merchants) Ltd, Sidmouth Wines Ltd, D.Byrne And Co, The Grape to Glass, The Wine Reserve Ltd, Alexander Hadleigh)
Aromas of Rose’s Lime Juice then quite broad, fleshy flavours of stewed rhubarb and cooked apple, and a classic sweet and sour finish, setting taut stony citrus acidity against a light honeyed sweetness. S(-)

Wente Riverbank Riesling 2014, Monterey, California (£15.49 The Wine Cellar, General Wine and Liquor)
The petrolly note may put some off, but those who love that character in Riesling will also enjoy the powerful nectarine and ripe citrus flavours, floral freshness, and touch of sweetness. S-

Now South Australia…

Shed Ten Verdelho 2016, South Australia (£9.99 Virgin Wines)
A curious wine, fat in parts, lean in parts, with an oily tinned peach character set against tarter lemon curd and greengage flavours, a note of pearskin and even a touch of wintergreen/pine. B

…and finally back to France

Le Cochon Doué Muscat Sec 2016, Pays d’Oc, France (£ 8.99 Virgin Wines)
Light, sappy, refreshing style, with richer lychee and barley sugar notes reined in by grapey citrus flavours and a sappy finish. B
