Chardonnays from South Africa & New Zealand

Seven Springs Unoaked Chardonnay 2014, Overberg, South Africa (~£12 contact North South Wines)
There’s a slightly bitter pithy edge and a lemony character here that reminds me as much of Semillon as Chardonnay. It’s still fresh and juicy, but it’s too rich to fall into the ‘pure’ camp and too simple to be of the bold, winemaker-led style. C+

Te Awanga Chardonnay 2014, Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand (£13.50 Oddbins)
Still with prominent toasty oak alongside the slightly oily tropical fruit and buttery characters, certainly lots of flavour but has a bit of a feel of being last year’s wine. B(-)
