Sauvignon Blanc from France & New Zealand

Calmel & Joseph Villa Blanche Sauvignon Blanc 2015, Pays d’Oc, France (£8.95-£9.36 Viader Wines, Richard Granger Wines)
Combines a ripe element – fleshy plum and guava – with a crisper, stonier citrus side: initially they sit apart but after a few minutes, they get together to make tuneful although not out-and-out beautiful music. B

The Paper Nautilus Sauvignon Blanc 2015, Marlborough, New Zealand (£20.99 Negociants UK)
Some Sauvignons suffer when oak appears, but here, the wood influence adds extra layers of smokiness and roundness to the rich passionfruit and guava and more tense gooseberry and herb flavours. Add in a flinty mineral note and lovely texture and you have an impressive wine – no crime to drink it now, but I’d love to see what this looks like in five years’ time. S
