Two Chilean Carignans


…in two rather different styles

Villalobos Viñedo Silvestre Carignan 2012, Colchagua, Chile (~£18 Les Caves de Pyrene)
I like the floral daintiness here, with a whiff of hops alongside the slightly smoky blackcurrant flavours, but there’s also something a little confected – do they still make Cola Spangles? – plus a hint of sweetness to the finish. B

Miguel Torres Cordillera Carignan 2010, Maule, Chile (£14-£15.50 Vintagemarque.com, Soho Wine Supply, Fareham Wine Cellars)
Quite plush and spicy, with rich dark damson, blackcurrant and berry flavours, there is a hint of raisin in there, but it’s not overpowering, and the finish is fleshy but fresh. S-
