Two Hawkes Bay Syrahs

Esk Valley Syrah 2011, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand (£17.15 Barrica Wines, Famous Wine UK, Hoults Wine Merchants, North and South Wines, DeFINE Food and Wine, Wright Wine Company, The Drinkshop.com, The New Zealand House of Wine)
Quite pale in colour, light to medium body, has the classic peppery clove, blackcurrant and berry character, tasty and fragrant, but maybe lacking a little fruit flesh. B+

Vidal Reserve Gimblett Gravels Syrah 2013, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand (£17.15 Cambridge Wine Merchants, New Zealand House of Wine)
Deep fleshy red berry, damson and plum, very rich and juicy, but while it has the flesh the above wine lacks, it misses out on the aroma. S-

PS I tried blending the two wines in order to have a wine with both substance and style – the result was better than both of them!
