Wine Tasting Video: Cru Beaujolais

Henry Fessy Fleurie 2011 (£14.95 Oddbins, Hailsham Cellars, Winedirect.co.uk, George Hill, Wine House, Forth Wines)
Really attractive style, starts off quietly then opens up in the glass to show plusher raspberry, cherry and plum flesh, but all the while with an earthy mineral undercurrent to keep it fresh. S

Château de Raousset Fleurie ‘Grille Midi’ 2011 (£12.40 Justerini & Brooks)
Lovely immediate juicy and joyful wine, lots of raspberry and strawberry allure, and a tangy finish. B+

Château de Pizay Morgon 2011 (£10.49 Majestic)
Something odd going on here: OK red fruit, but it’s slightly fizzy, and there’s an animal/brettanomyces note too. C-

Château de Chénas Moulin à Vent 2010 (£11.99 Waitrose)
Quite a succulent style, with a hint of ripe apple adding tang and freshness to the earthy plum and strawberry flavours, and a touch of tannin to firm up the finish. B(+)

Trichard Domaine des Pierres Saint-Amour 2010 (£12.40 Tanners)
Good mix of flesh and freshness, there’s a slightly roasted kernel note on top of the gentle raspberry and plum flavours, then the earthy mineral element kicks in, along with some refreshing appley acidity. Tasty now, but still plenty of life ahead of it. S(-)

Claudius Morand Fleurie 2010 (£12.49 Majestic)
The nail varnish imprint of volatile acidity – next! 0

Domaine de Colette Morgon 2010 (£13.99 Halifax Wine Company)
Oozing confidence, this combines supple redcurrant and red berry fruit with a perfumed, violet-like fragrance and a fresh, slightly earthy finish. A touch of tannin even suggests that its best is still to come. S(-)

Louis Jadot Château des Jacques Moulin à Vent 2008 (£14.99 Fenwicks, Wright Wine Company, Hoults, Whalley Wine Shop, Harrods, Temple Wines)
The firm and chunky side of Beaujolais, but beyond the earthy tannins and fresh acidity, there’s plenty of rich plummy raspberry and blackberry flesh to balance. Might even still need another year or so to reach its peak. S-
