Wine Tasting Video: Sauvignon Blanc from Chile, Spain & France

UPDATE: just tried another batch of Sauvignons – the video’s here

Prestige de Calvet Sémillon/Sauvignon 2010, Bordeaux, France (£10.49- £10.99 Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons)
OK pithy lemon character but finishes in rather flat, drab finish, and doesn’t improve with time open. 0

Spar Sauvignon Blanc Vin de Pays d’Oc NV, France (£5.35 Spar)
A struggle to get excited here – vague lemon/lime jelly character but not a great deal else. 0

Castell del Remei Blanc Planell Costers del Segre 2010, Spain (£9.99 Virgin Wines)
Ah, finally some character, this is one of those wines that creep up on you. It starts of slightly shy and grassy, with slight catty citrus character, but then the crisp, stony minerality kicks in. Not showy, but tasty. B(+)

Casillero del Diablo Reserva Privada Sauvignon Blanc 2010, Limari, Chile (£9.99 www.yourfavouritewines.com, www.tesco.com)
Young, ripe paw-paw and guava notes wrapped round a greener citrus and green pepper spine. Decent, but a little too loud for real class. B-

Casa Marin Cipreses Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2009, San Antonio, Chile (£17.00 Wimbledon Wine Cellar, Hay Wines, Forman Wickes Wines)
Classy wine, all the better for the extra bottle age. Has the green, spring-like flavours – citrus, greengage, gooseberry, elderflower and green pepper – but there’s also weight and earthy minerality to round it out, plus a ripe but restrained finish. S(-)
(the Casa Marin web page should be here, but I didn’t have any luck getting into it)
